Gabriele Manca studied piano with Bruno Canino and composition with Giacomo Manzoni at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan, and in 1985 was awarded the "New Generation in Europe" prize at the European Music Year organized by the WDR (Cologne), the Venice Biennale and the Festivale d'Automne (Paris). In 2000, Manca was a fellow of the Uchida Foundation and spent several months in Japan, where he composed music for Noh plays at the Noh theatre.
