Vivaldi’s *Complete Cantatas for Soprano*—a four-volume set that was previously released as individual recordings and received high praise as the first complete recording of the cycle—has been reissued as a value-packed 4-CD box set. This groundbreaking complete recording is performed by the early music ensemble “Modo Antico,” led by Federico Maria Sardelli, an authority in the Italian early music scene. Composed with the talented female musicians of the Pietà in mind, these cantatas are a collection of challenging works that demand virtuosic techniques from the singers—such as ornamentation, leaps, and arpeggios—much like those found in violin pieces. Respecting the performance practices of the time, the ensemble used original manuscripts wherever possible and adopted a rigorous scholarly approach, consulting the critical edition published by the Vivaldi Music Institute. CD 4 includes “Tremorialbraccio” RV 799—which had only just been discovered in 1999 at the Library of the Vienna Musikverein—as well as RV 680 and RV 678, both featuring obbligato parts for flute and violin. This historic recording features three sopranos, including the renowned Rossana Bertini, who delve into the depths of Baroque music with extraordinary technique and lyricism.
