A 17th-century Italian virtuoso violinist. A masterpiece collection of trio sonatas by Pandolfi Mealli! Giovanni Antonio Pandolfi Mealli (1620–1669) was a composer and violinist who served as a court musician to Archduke Ferdinand of Austria in Innsbruck and as the city musician of Messina. Although Pandolfi Mealli—who left behind technically demanding violin sonatas and was himself a virtuoso violinist—remains largely shrouded in mystery regarding his life and works, research by Enrico Gatti suggests that, following an altercation at the Duomo, he killed the Messina castrato, Giovanni Marchetto, and subsequently fled from Italy to France and Spain, where he continued to perform at royal chapels throughout those regions. The “Collection of Trio Sonatas,” published in Rome, Italy, in 1669 and currently housed at the Municipal Music Museum of Bologna as of 2017, is a masterpiece by Pandolfi Mealli that reveals the influence of Spanish musical culture and dance music. The dynamic performance by Baroque violinist Fabrizio Longo—a native of Messina, Sicily—and his own ensemble, Opera Quinta, brings out the full charm of the work.
