Description:
Born in Pavia, Italy, Alessandro Lolla (1757-1841) is known to have contributed greatly to the development of string playing in Italy, leaving behind some 600 works during his lifetime. He studied viola and violin in Milan, and from 1782 to 1801 played with the Royal Orchestra in Parma, and in 1802 became concert master at La Scala in Milan. He was also active as a teacher and trained many students. According to the catalog of his works compiled by L. Inzaghi and L. A. Bianchi, there are about 20 concertos for violin and 15 for viola alone.All of these concertos are different from the classical concertos in that the score itself is simple, but according to the conventions of the time, performers are required to be able to read a lot from the score, and even if they play the same piece, they are required to be unique in ornamentation, phrasing, and cadenza, which is a different kind of fun than in the classical concertos.
