Christie has been a leader in the world of classical music for more than 30 years, but for some reason, he has not been associated with Monteverdi's "Orfeo" and there has been no recording of it until now. This DVD contains the performance of "Orfeo" Christie gave in May 2008 at the Teatro Real in Madrid. As one would expect from Christie, "Orfeo" is overwhelming, with every inch of intelligence. The title role is played by Henschel! Henschel has a strong image as a lieder singer among the Japanese, but Orfeo, with his grace, eloquence, and baritone strength, was highly acclaimed as an unprecedented image of Orfeo. The role of Euridice was played by a young soprano from Naples, Schiavo.She is a soprano of great promise, having sung Baroque music in Italy and Spain, as well as Zerlina in "Don Giovanni" conducted by Maazel in Vienna. In Vienna, she sang Zerlina in "Don Giovanni" conducted by Maazel. The production is directed by the great Pizzi! While based on the 17th century style, Pizzi brings his own refined beauty to the production, and succeeds in capturing the deep drama depicted by Monteverdi.
