A major opera by Wolinen, one of the leading composers of the contemporary music scene on the East Coast of the United States. Wolinen is regarded as one of the leading representatives of American atonal music, along with Elliott Carter, and has received numerous awards including the Pulitzer Prize. The opera "Haroon and the Sea of Stories" is based on a children's fantasy novel by Indian-American author Salman Rushdie. Although the original was written as children's literature, the opera is written in an uncompromisingly strict atonal style, emphasizing the dystopian (anti-utopian) nature of the original work.
