The complete works project, featuring world-premiere recordings, is finally complete. Beautiful melodies long buried in history are now being breathed new life. The prolific and versatile Italian composer Gaetano Donizetti, a central figure in Italian bel canto opera, also left behind some 200 solo songs. Most of these rarely receive a performance, and some were completely unknown until recently. Under the supervision of musicologist Roger Parker and conducted by Carlo Rizzi, Artistic Director of OperaRara, OperaRara is releasing Donizetti’s complete song cycle in an eight-album recital series. This project powerfully demonstrates that Donizetti was a major figure in the 19th-century art song repertoire and seeks to revive the presence of the Italian school in a field long dominated by German and French composers. Following the critically acclaimed “Donizetti Songbook Vol. 2” for baritone, Nicola Alaiomo and Carlo Rizzi delve into the rich repertoire for bass-baritone in this new release featuring songs in Italian and French. With Volume 8, Opera Lara’s groundbreaking “Donizetti Song Project” comes to a close, finally breathing life into one of the most remarkable rediscoveries in the Italian vocal world. Includes a 68-page booklet (notes and song lyrics in Western languages only). Baritone Nicola Alaymo made his American debut in 2009 in *Simon Boccanegra* with the Boston Symphony Orchestra conducted by Levine. He made his Met debut in the same production in 2011 to rave reviews and is now an indispensable baritone for operas by Rossini, Donizetti, and others. He also received high praise for his overwhelming vocal resonance and acting skills in the 2023 production of “Falstaff” at the New National Theatre.
