Jörg Demus (1928-2019) began his career as a pianist in Vienna with Walter Kerschbaumer, a pupil of Moritz Rosenthal; he made his solo recital debut in 1943 during World War II and spent the first few years after the war primarily in Vienna. In the 1950s, Demus appeared on the international stage, performing throughout Europe, South America, and the United States. Despite his acclaim, Demus concentrated on his artistic development and pursued advanced studies with prominent teachers. classes with Walter Gieseking in Saarbrücken. His pursuit of excellence continued in 1956 with a summer course in Arezzo with Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, followed in 1957 by a Beethoven interpretation seminar organized by Wilhelm Kemp in Positano.The album features previously unreleased broadcast recordings from Dresden, East Germany, including two solo recitals and a remarkable recording of Schumann's Piano Concerto conducted by Kirill Kondrashin.
