STEPMOTHER is a multinational project centered around LUKASSIMONIS—a leading figure in the Dutch experimental music scene who has collaborated with artists such as France’s PIERREBASTIEN, the U.S.’s EUGENECHADBOURNE, and the U.K.’s CHRISCUTLER—and featuring seasoned musicians including BILLGILONIS of THEWORK. This unique ensemble fuses the legacy of Dutch post-punk with the experimental spirit of avant-rock to create a sound that is always unpredictable. Released in 2026, this album marks a dramatic evolution for the group, coming nearly a decade after their previous work, with the addition of Slovenian vocalist TISAWORLD and drummer PHILIPPERNSTING. It was TISAWORLD’s bewitching and powerful vocals that broke through the initial creative stagnation, serving as the catalyst that propelled the project to completion in one fell swoop. The album features 14 tracks brimming with intricate yet bold arrangements, ranging from "GREATTRADINGDAYSII," which captures the essence of European avant-pop, to the BONZODOGBAND-esque "GOBLINMARKET" with its ominous brass, "SCREWTHESCREWS" where twisted strings and electronic sounds spark, and the theatrical pop of " IAMAGAMBLER," and more—a total of 14 tracks overflowing with intricate yet bold ensembles. Each member’s exceptional skill and experimental approach invites listeners into uncharted musical territory.
