Balearic Pop x Dub Trance! A collaboration between a mysterious orchestra from Geneva and a pop rock band from France! Orchestre to Puissant Marcel Duchamp (OPTMD), a Geneva-based band that has gained a cult following for its uncategorizable mix of free jazz, post-punk, highlife, krautrock, and more, and has even made Shintaro Sakamoto's playlist, Through a daring collaboration on this new 7-inch, they further blur the originally ambiguous sense of genre. The A-side, "Revenant du Nord," is a long-simmering song conceived in the early 2000s based on a circular organ phrase. It is set against the backdrop of a trip to Morocco and encounters with young immigrants standing on the borders of Europe, and François unearths these memories in the form of poetic lyrics. The words are supported by the rich ensemble of OTPMD and the voices of Basque singers. Organ riffs originally played with "nine fingers" are now transformed into four-handed marimba phrases, and the themes of "movement," "boundaries," and "asymmetrical freedom" are depicted in a hypnotic, polyrhythmic sonic journey. The B-side, "Silent," is a dirty, dub-tinged arrangement. Built around a hypnotic 6/4 time signature, it chews on the physical sonic energy experienced at Dubquake in Geneva through OTPMD's own orchestral arrangements. The impressive vocals of Joe Burke and the shimmering touch of drummer Lucien Chatin combine to make "Siilent" a sound that moves back and forth between dub trance and chamber music.
