SofaRecords and BongoJoe have teamed up once again to launch a new project exploring Maghreb funky tape music driven by synthesizers! In addition to previously unreleased tracks, the release features liner notes, interviews, and rare photos available exclusively here. This compilation features eight tracks by Yassin Nana, a figure who epitomized Mauritanian pop music from the 1980s through the 1990s. It offers a taste of the Saharan pop sound, a fusion of reggae, dub, new wave, and funk. Yassin recorded in Nouakchott, Paris, and Rabat, and these tracks were originally released on only two rare cassette tapes. There is no doubt that this music was part of the vibrant African soundwave that swept across the entire continent at the time, from Abidjan to Oran to Kinshasa. The great Yassin Nana family, once at the center of Mauritanian contemporary music, brought innovation to traditional music by incorporating drum machines and synthesizers, filling massive arenas during their peak in the 1980s. Acclaimed across much of North Africa, the Nana family created music where the TR-808 sliced through desert melodies and reggae basslines carried Saharan poetry into new realms. Long before the term “desert blues” became known worldwide, the Nana family had already laid the groundwork, incorporating Western instruments into Saharan music and paving the way for artists like Tinariwen and Emdu Mokhtar to follow. However, despite their high standing in their home country, their influence did not spread as widely as it should have. The track begins with the voices of the entire family gathered during a session in Paris, before a swirling, slightly unstable synth and the pulsing of a drum machine suddenly emerge. Whistles and sharp vocals—unmistakably reminiscent of Michael Jackson—cut through the beat, while Yassin’s vocals soar into an emotive melody, unfolding smoothly over a light, driving groove. A stunning piece of work.
