Description:
This is a rare collection of songs by Joachim Ruff (1822-1882), one of Switzerland's most famous composers. Known as a pupil and friend of Liszt, he also showed great talent in composing orchestral works, leaving behind 11 symphonies as well as masterpieces in the fields of concertos and string quartets. This 2-CD set includes two rare world premiere recordings of his two song cycles, the lyrical "Spring Song" with a Schumannesque flavor and "Maria Stuart," written in his later years, both with a heavy emphasis on piano accompaniment, and both full and rich music typical of Raff's career as an outstanding pianist. The music is full and rich, as is typical of Ruff, who boasted a distinguished career as a pianist. Recorded in 2011. (C)RS
