Description:
Friedrich von Schiller, the German playwright known for the lyrics of Beethoven's "Chorus," wrote "The Bride of Messina" in 1803. His "The Bride of Messina," written in 1803 in the style of a Greek tragedy, is set in Messina, Sicily, and depicts the psychological conflict between Isabella, a widow of the previous Grand Duke, and her two sons Manuel and César, who are constantly at odds. Once reconciled, the brothers' story is thrown into confusion when they become enchanted by the same girl. The truth is eventually revealed. The play was originally written with a chorus, and the background of the story is told by the chorus, but Fibich (1850-1900) incorporated this into his three-act opera. The opera was first performed in Prague in 1884, where it was well received by the audience, but was criticized by critics as being too similar to Wagner's work, and was performed only sporadically in Prague.
