Description:
Steenhammar (1871-1927), who studied in Germany, became a major figure in Swedish music at the beginning of the 20th century with his highly successful dramatic music, which mixed Swedish folk songs with a moderate Wagnerian flavor. Today, however, his chamber music is rarely heard. Although he initially wrote works in the late Romantic style, around 1910 he began to embark on works with more transparent and deeply nationalistic elements. In the string quartets on this album, Nos. 3 and 4 belong to the late Romantic style, but Nos. 5 and 6 were composed under a new conception, and you can hear the gradual change in their style, can't you? Anyway, they are beautiful and limpid works. Naxos Japan
