The year 2017 marks the 500th anniversary of Luther's advocacy of the Reformation, and the cpo label plans to release several Luther-related albums to commemorate the occasion. The album's title, "Wolfenbüttel Castle," refers to the Holy Roman Empire's fiefdom of Heinrich II, who ruled the country from 1514 to 1568 and is known as a man who threw himself directly into the Reformation. Heinrich II's grandson, Heinrich Julius (1564-1613), was a wise king who ruled over both the sacred and secular worlds and contributed greatly to cultural development. Praetorius served as Julius' court organist and music director from 1614, and was a composer who contributed to the development of Protestant hymns. Pretorius' father is also said to have been taught by Luther, and the Pretorius family seems to have been closely related to the Reformation in some way. Naxos Japan
