Description:

A Collection of Works by Kokkonen, a Leading Figure in the Finnish Music Scene, Vol. 2 This second volume of Kokkonen’s works features the Finnish Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra and Sakari Oramo. Like the first volume (ODE1098), this album has attracted attention from media in Europe and the United States. Jonas Kokkonen’s residence was designed by Alvar Aalto, one of the leading architects of 20th-century Finland. The two were united by the belief that a “passion for quality” governs the creative process. Kokkonen and Aalto both left outstanding legacies in their respective fields. Kokkonen’s Symphony No. 1 was composed at a time when Finnish music was embracing modernism and the symphony was considered outdated. Resonating with Sibelius’s symphonic thinking, Kokkonen sought a new form of symphonic music through a compositional structure distinct from Sibelius’s. He created works based on a concise twelve-tone row. Kokkonen, who shifted from an early neoclassical style to composition using the twelve-tone technique, is said to have once joked, “J.S. Bach’s two-part inventions are the best textbook on the twelve-tone technique.” His Symphony No. 2 is even more introspective, tragic, and ascetic in character. The four movements are grouped into two sets—the first movement, Adagio non troppo, and the second movement, Allegro; and the third movement, Andante, and the fourth movement, Allegro vivace—to further develop his symphonic thinking. The short three-movement work “Opus Sonorum” (Works of Sound) features five notes—taken from the name “Jean Sibelius”—as its central motif. Instead of including percussion instruments, the piano is used to create percussive sounds. [Comment provided by King International]
