Segerstam’s profound and distinctive recordings of Sibelius’s symphonies are finally available as a complete set! Sibelius’s symphonies, performed by the Helsinki Philharmonic and Segerstam, have been compiled into a 4-CD complete set. These performances are enriched with a variety of charms, including a transparent texture and the poetic resonance of the woodwinds. While “Finlandia” (with male chorus) is included, “The Daughter of Pohjola” (both originally paired with Symphony No. 4) has been omitted. Instead, the collection features the Violin Concerto recorded by Pekka Kuusisto at the age of 19, during his first tour of Japan with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra. Pekka’s performance rejects the temptation to show off technical virtuosity, a trap into which many violinists fall. Full of empathy and offering a well-balanced expression of the beauty and power of Sibelius’s music, this performance captured the hearts of the Finnish people and became a bestseller. As for symphony recordings, Segerstam’s complete Sibelius symphony series began with a single album pairing Symphonies Nos. 1 and 7. This was followed by releases pairing Nos. 2 and 6, then Nos. 3 and 5, and the series was finally completed with an album featuring Symphony No. 4 and others. This marks Segerstam’s second complete set; he previously recorded a complete set with the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra for the CHANDOS label [CHAN7054; 1990–92]. While the earlier recordings have also received high praise, the rich, robust, and intense musicality that defines Segerstam’s style remains a major attraction in this new series as well. Furthermore, the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra—which has premiered many of Sibelius’s works—delivers a performance brimming with empathy that is truly wonderful.
