Bach's Violin Partita No. 2, which has a long "Chaconne" as its finale, reveals the melody that Bach dedicated to his late wife in the "Chaconne". The "Chaconne" conceals a number of chorale melodies, which are assumed to be an epitaph dedicated to his first bereaved wife, Maria Barbara. In this thrilling disc, violinist Gertrud Schilde and the North German Chamber Choir reveal the hidden chorale. Schilde also performs the Chaconne with Jean-Philippe Schulze in a piano accompaniment version of Mendelssohn's arrangement, adding another dimension to this surprising discovery and shedding radiant new light on the rhythmic and pleasant musical progression of this brilliant masterpiece.
