The Stuttgart Children's Choir of John Stuttgart (Stuttgart Himnus Boys' Choir) was founded in 1900, inspired by the prestigious boys' choirs of Leipzig and Dresden, by the efforts of one of the most outstanding promoters of the Swabian region at the time, Paul von Leffler (1849-1925), who was also a member of the Stuttgart Boys' Choir. Although its activities were temporarily interrupted during the interwar years, it was reestablished in 1946 by Gerhard Wilhelm, who had been a member of the group as a boy, and under his leadership it achieved international renown. The John Passion is said to be more dramatic than the Matthew Passion. This may be due in part to the emphasis on the chorale throughout, beginning with the scene where Jesus is arrested.The question of which edition to use in the performance of John becomes an issue, and here the rich experience of the choir's music director and conductor, Homburg, has led to the selection of a final manuscript that suits the choir's gentle expression and refined tone with matured instrumental music.
