Schumann's Rare Works Played on the ErlardDuring the time when Schumann was composing, there was an instrument called the pedal flugel, which was developed around 1800 as a foot-key retrofit to the piano. Developed around 1800 and gradually improved, it was introduced to the Leipzig Music School, where Schumann became interested in it. He saw great promise in this instrument and hoped to popularize it, but unfortunately this was never achieved. Bizet arranged the exercises originally written for this instrument for four-handed piano, but here we can get a glimpse of Schumann's thoughts by using an 1837 Erard. The other two collections are "Pictures of the Orient," inspired by medieval Arabic poetry, and a collection of 12 linked pieces composed for his eldest daughter, Marie. Universal Music/IMS
