Today, Johann Adam Hiller is considered the creator of the Zinkspiel, which also includes an adaptation of Pergolesi's Stabat Mater. He is also known for his efforts to foster the development of women singers, of which he was responsible for the development of numerous singers. Most of his works are now forgotten, but those that remain are all excellent. Two of the three works on this album are his originals, but the most notable is his adaptation of Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater. Originally a modest work for soprano, alto, and string ensemble, Hiller made a bold arrangement with Klopstock's German text and the addition of oboe, flute, and male voices for the solo parts. This made the work a favorite of the Lutherans of the day, and it was a brilliant achievement of ecumenism (world-churchism). Universal Music/IMS
