Serge Celibidacke was one of the great individualists of the podium, whose idiosyncratic interpretations inspired either contempt or respect in his audiences. Recorded for broadcast during his days with the Munich Philharmonic, this performance should leave most listeners in awe of "Celli" at his best. Franck's symphony is an incredibly intense and wonderful performance, crafted from a stunning framework of grandeur. It is painted on a broad canvas at a lofty level, performed with remarkable concentration and intensity. Debussy is also outstanding, and Celibidacke explores a depth that no other conductor has found in this unique work drawn from Debussy's unique and mysterious score. Christoph Stickel, who has mastered many of these works as well as the Munich Philharmonic label as mastering engineer, has hi-vitrified and remastered the recording and released it in its best possible form.
