The Philharmonia Orchestra was founded in 1945, but due to the financial problems of its owner, Walter Legg, it was renamed the New Philharmonia Orchestra. Klemperer (1885-1973) became the permanent conductor in 1959, and as the lifetime conductor, he left behind a number of masterful recordings, including a live performance of Beethoven's Violin Concerto in January 1966 with Menuhin (1916-1999) as a guest.
