Description:
Featuring a previously unreleased recording! Furtwängler & the Philharmonia Orchestra & Flagstar May 22, 1950, London; Royal Albert Hall The Testament label website describes this recording as “Broadcast from the Royal Albert Hall, London, May 22, 1950” and “STRAUSS Four Last Songs World Premiere Performance.” While this performance has long been renowned, its long-awaited release on CD by Testament makes it a highly anticipated release for collectors and fans alike. While “Four Last Songs” has previously been released on LP—both domestically and as imports—this reissue is highly anticipated (though it’s best not to get your hopes up too high). And Wagner’s “Tristan” and “Die Götter” are the “highlights” of this album. As a rare recording of Wagner made in 1950 by Furtwängler and the Philharmonia Orchestra, it is well worth a close listen. This recording captures the May 22, 1950, performance that marked the world premiere of Richard Strauss’s “Four Last Songs.” While the first half of the program—featuring Richard Strauss—has been released on numerous unofficial recordings in the past, all of them used acetate discs in poor condition, resulting in terrible sound quality. For this official release, Testament has sourced a relatively well-preserved master, achieving the best sound quality to date. You can hear the finest details and the warm tone that Furtwängler draws from the orchestra. Note that while this recording has traditionally been considered a dress rehearsal rather than a live performance, it actually captures the actual concert performance. The Wagner works in the second half are a legendary recording that was previously thought to have been lost entirely. This is the world’s first release, restored from a well-preserved acetate master. While “Siegfried Idyll” and the prelude to “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg” could not be restored due to damage to the disc, the rest of the program has been revived in excellent sound quality, allowing you to fully appreciate Furtwängler’s artistry.
