Michael Gielen (1927-) is regarded as one of the most important conductors today. Born in Dresden to a stage director father, he moved to Argentina in 1940 to study music in Buenos Aires. He is known for the episode in which he met and studied with Carlos Kleiber. His repertoire ranges from classical to contemporary, and his performances of Mahler's symphonies and Schoenberg's works with the Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra in Baden-Baden have been recognized as unparalleled. This "Gielen Edition" was produced to commemorate the 90th anniversary of his birth in 2017, and the SWR label will release a total of 10 collections over the next three years. This first collection includes recordings from the 1960s to more recent recordings, most of which are first recordings, and is sure to be essential not only for his fans, but also for a bird's-eye view of one of the styles of classical music performance in the 20th century.
