This album, released to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Sergei Lyapunov's (1859-1924) death, is an excellent opportunity to delve deeper into some of Lyapunov's undisputed masterpieces in the field of piano music. Lyapunov's genealogy as a pianist derives directly from Franz Liszt (he studied piano with Liszt's pupil Carl Klintvold), and he was a master of two rival schools of contemporary Russian music (Tchaikovsky and his pupil Taneyev on the one hand, and the Russian five-piece group that aimed at nationalism on the other Balakirev), he was able to incorporate a variety of elements to create his own style. The piano virtuosity he learned at the Liszt School, the style he inherited from the Russian masters of Western styles, and the knowledge of Russian folk heritage he gained from the Russian Five and his own fieldwork have all contributed to the nostalgic "Songs of Twilight" and "Autumn," the powerful and highly technical piano sonatas Sonata and Variations on Russian and Georgian (Georgian) Themes.
