Twenty-one pieces selected and annotated by Beethoven from the Cramer Exercises. The German-born composer Johann Baptiste Cramer, who also taught piano to Clementi, is said to have played these pieces for Beethoven's nephews Carl and Clara Schumann, and in Japan, the scores revised by Hans von Bülow are well established among piano students. Beethoven, who had been in contact with Kramer and highly appreciated him, considered this collection suitable for his own teaching activities, and selected 21 pieces from the first published Op.30 and annotated them with various notes, including performance aspects such as the treatment of accents. The notes were written by Anton Schindler, Beethoven's secretary and biographer, and have been handed down to posterity.Giusi de Berardinis, a professor at the Umberto Giordano Conservatory of Music, was inspired by his own research on accents to complete a project to analyze and record the 21 pieces with the piano students of the Conservatory.
