Description:
A beautiful cantata left behind by Sandström that appeals to the hearts of his audience! Two years have passed since Swedish composer Sven-David Sandström passed away suddenly on June 10, 2019. The cantata "Farewell," considered to be the last work he worked on, will be released on CD. Sven-David Sandström was born in Bollensberg and studied composition at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm in Ingvar Readholm's class. While there, he also studied with Gerge Ligeti and Pia Nuago, who were visiting professors, and was greatly influenced by them. His creative activities cover a wide range of genres, including chamber music, orchestral music, choral music, and vocal music, and one of the characteristics of his music is that he freely changes his style depending on the subject matter. His most important works include "Requiem" (Caprice CAP 22027), "Solemn Mass" (CAP 22036), and "Lullaby - Tora" (Phono Suecia PSCD 139) for a cappella chorus. The cantata "Farewell" (subtitled "There is an old time and a new time") was commissioned by Ulf Bellistrem, a former flutist. In accordance with his wishes, Werner Aspenström's (1918-1998) collection of poems "The Legend of Snow" was used as the text. The Living Trees," "The Flat Ground of an Impossible City," "Interlude I," "Respectful Request," "Interlude II," "It Is on the Face of a Sleeper," "The Waiting Man Does Not Come Through the Suburbs," "Night Fishing," "18th Century Style Birds," "Interlude III," "Farewell," and "The Farewell. The title of the piece is taken from the final chapter of "uppbrott," which means "salvage," "departure," "dismantling," or "dismantling," and is a strong statement of intent to "break with our old way of life, which leads to greenhouse effects and environmental destruction. The work was premiered on June 15, 2019, less than a week after Sandström's death, at Stockholm's Adolf Fredrik Church, and this release is a live recording of the premiere performance, which reportedly moved the audience so strongly.
