Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir

Description:

He played several shows in New York in April 2000, but the exact date of the recording was not known. This album was mastered from 'DAT', which I found 20 years later, and contains his wonderful performances in their entirety, unedited and unaltered. These memories are capped off with a short excerpt from a street interview he gave in New York City.A collection of choral works by Ulo Krigl, a remarkable Estonian composer who has absorbed various genres of music! Ulo Krigl (1978-), born in Tallinn, has attracted attention for his vibrant and dynamically expressive music and is considered a composer of the music of Estonia in the 21st century. He studied at the Estonian Academy of Music and the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna after spending his teenage years as a keyboard player and arranger in rock and jazz ensembles. His compositions are based on a wide range of techniques and diction, with influences from jazz, post-minimalism, and sonorism. His works have been performed at festivals at home and in countries such as Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Latvia, and Ukraine. Krigl is still active as a member of experimental music groups and rock bands. The three pieces on this album were composed between 2019 and 2020, when Krigl was composer-in-residence of the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir. Vesi ise (The Water), his first composition for the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir and conductor Ptoninš (1966-), serves as a "prelude" to the common "journey. Vesi ise (The Water)" is a work that composer Krigl describes as "somewhere between contemplative practice and concert music. Commissioned by the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, it was composed without a specific text, and only a few weeks before its premiere, a poem by the Estonian surrealist poet Ilmar Laban (1921-2000) was added as lyrics. And the Sea Arose" is a piece reminiscent of a "miniature play" with "water," "Jesus," and "St. Peter" as the main characters. The text is based on the Gospel of John (6:18) ("A strong wind blew, and the lake began to rage") and the Gospel of Matthew (14:29-32), both in English, edited by Hedi Rosma. Aga vaata aina ules (But always look up)" is based on Estonian philosopher Uku Masing's Vaatlusi maailmale eoloogi (Vaatlusi maailmale eoloogi), which is based on the concept of "connecting the physical world that surrounds us with the philosophical world that is within us. The text is based on Estonian philosopher Uku Masing's "Vaatlusi maailmale eoloogi seisukohalt (Observation of the world from a theologian's point of view)," assembled by Hedi Rosma. Hingamisi (Breathe), Oo on pime (The night is dark), Puud aina kasvavad (Trees will grow), Ainuski pilv ei tule tagasi (The clouds will not return), Lahkuda onnidest (Leave the hut), Kui canasta Kui canasta" is a six-movement piece. Composed on commission from IRCAM and the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, "liquid turns" is an excerpt from the text and musical fragments of these two works, re-created as a "new whole" and composed in two parts: a "field recording of a frozen river" and a "frozen river" representing "liquid turns - melting and solidifying"; and a "frozen river" representing "the melting and solidifying of a frozen river. The computer music design was done by Carlo Laurenzi of IRCAM, using "field recordings of a frozen river" and "recordings of melting ice and freezing water" to represent "liquid changes - melting and freezing.
