Description:
Commemorating the 100th anniversary of the birth of filmmaker Bergman. Release of the opera based on the film "Autumn Sonata"! Otter as Charlotte! SACD hybrid disc. In 2018, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Swedish film director Bergman (1918-2007), the BIS label is releasing a follow-up album to Roland Penttinen's Music from Ingmar Bergman's Films (BIS SA 2377). Autumn Sonata" was commissioned by the Finnish National Opera. Based on Bergman's 1978 film "Hostsonaten" starring Ingrid Bergman and Liv Ullmann, Finnish author Gunilla Hemming (1955-) wrote the Swedish libretto, and Finnish composer Sebastian Fagerlund ( The music was composed by Finnish composer Sebastian Fagerlund ( 1972-). Autumn. Eva and her husband Victor, who live in a parsonage, are looking forward to a visit from her mother Charlotte. Charlotte is busy as a concert pianist and has not seen her daughters for seven years.Eva and Victor lost their three-year-old son Erik in a water accident, and Charlotte was predeceased by her partner Leonardo. When Charlotte arrives at the parsonage, Eva has taken in Helena, who is disabled and whom she would have institutionalized. Tensions between mother and daughter gradually increase. ...... Hemming and Fagerlund structured this story into an overture, Act 1 from Scene 1 "At the Parsonage" to Scene 13 "Outside Helena's Room," and Act 2 from Scene 14 "Outside Helena's Room" to Scene 19 "Epilogue. In the "present" of the parsonage, the events of different times and times are incorporated in a multilayered manner: "In the Concert Hall" (scene 3), "Charlotte and the Audience" (scene 5), "Charlotte, Eva and the Audience" (scene 7), "In the Cemetery" (scene 9), and the mute Helena suddenly starts speaking (scene 17), The conflict that Bergman describes in "Reality" is expressed on a stage where reality and fantasy are expanded to the utmost limit. Composer Fagerlund's music has been noted as characterized by a style that is "richly resonant, fast-moving, and multifaceted, yet averse to the rigors of modernism.Autumn Sonata is his second opera, after Debern (BIS SA 1780), which is based on the Second Russo-Swedish War (1808-09). The premiere was at the Finnish National Opera on September 8, 2017. Notably, Charlotte is sung by mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter (1955-). Soprano Erika Sunnegård (1966-), who made her Metropolitan Opera debut in the title role in "Fidelio," sings Eva. Conductor Jón Sturgård (1963-) was principal conductor of the Helsinki Philharmonic until 2015 and has conducted orchestras in Europe and the United States with contemporary music as his main repertoire. This album was produced from live recordings of three performances that followed the premiere at the Finnish National Opera. King International
