The talented violinist Wajim Gluzman, known for his performances with the NHK Symphony Orchestra, has released many discs on the BIS label, and this highly anticipated new release features three works by the contemporary Latvian composer Vasks. Vasks began his musical career as a contrabassist and studied composition in Lithuania. He is still active as a composer. The Concerto for Violin and String Orchestra "Distant Light" was composed for Gidon Kremer, and is one of Vasks' most famous works, consisting of five parts including three cadenzas. Summer Dance is a work for two violins. It is grand in its beauty and meditative in its spirituality. The Piano Quartet is a remarkable work that has been performed by many performers since its premiere in 2001. It is written in six movements and has a variety of colors, incorporating music from his native Latvia. Gruzman's excellent performance shines through in this remarkable disc. King International
