Christian Lindberg’s (b. 1958) career as a conductor began in 2010 when he was invited to conduct the Northern Sinfonia in the UK. Buoyed by a favorable review in *The Guardian*, he was appointed music director of the Nordic Chamber Orchestra and the Swedish Wind Ensemble within less than a year. The BIS label, which had previously released albums featuring him as a trombonist, also began producing recordings of him conducting various orchestras. A series of symphonies by the Swedish composer Allan Pettersson, as well as Lindberg’s own orchestral works, have been released on an ongoing basis. His new album features works by Stenhammar, whose style and compositional approach stand in stark contrast to those of Pettersson. Wilhelm Stenhammar (1871–1927) was born in Stockholm. While working as a conductor and pianist, he composed orchestral works, chamber music, art songs, and choral works. His music, characterized by a dignified presence and a noble aura underpinned by warm humanity, is widely beloved, and the movement “Sweden” from his cantata has long been sung as “another national anthem.” He was close friends with Sibelius, who dedicated his Symphony No. 6 to him. His Symphony No. 2 is a work that fuses late Romanticism with archaic styles. It consists of four movements: “Andante Energico,” “Andante,” “Scherzo,” and “Finale.” Based on the melodies and rhythms of “song,” the work also features elements reminiscent of the Dorian mode. “Music for August Strindberg’s *A Dream Play*” (Op. 36) was composed in 1916 for the opening performance at the Lawrenceberg Theater in Gothenburg. The “Concert Suite,” arranged by composer Hilding Rusenbergi (1892–1985), is an approximately 11-and-a-half-minute work that brings together pieces from the “Prelude” to the final “Fantasy,” while respecting the composer’s intended flow.
