Description:
Two interesting pieces by Lars Carlsson from the Åland Islands in the Baltic Sea! Lars Carlsson (1953-) was born in the autonomous Finnish archipelago of Åland in the Baltic Sea, between Sweden and Finland. He studied composition, piano and organ at the Sibelius Academy and has worked as a freelance composer. He began with a neo-romantic, expressive style, then explored techniques such as chromatic diction and free tonality with an awareness of "tonality and melody," arriving at his current style in the early 1990s, when he published a violin concerto in traditional major and minor tonalities, colored with chromatic melodies. It is said that he arrived at his present style around the time he published his first violin concerto, which is colored with whole-tone melodies in traditional major and minor tones. Seven Songs on Verses of Per Lagerqvist" is the brainchild of Swedish-born baritone Gabriel Suovanen (1977-), who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1951 for his work on the poems of Swedish author, playwright, poet, and essayist Lagerqvist ( 1891-1974), who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1951. The text of "Like Waves Lapping on the Shore" was chosen again for the chorus following its selection in 1976.The Clarinet Concerto is in three movements: "Lento-Allegretto," "Andante," and "Presto. It is written in the traditional manner, reusing material from earlier works. Christoffel Sundqvist (1964-), principal clarinet of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, provided the idea for this piece. He has recorded the clarinet concertos of Fagerlund (BIS SA 1707) and Nordgren (ABCD 359) and is a soloist. Jon Stulgård (1963-), artistic director of the Lapland Chamber Orchestra, has been in close contact with Carlsen, conducting two symphonies and the premiere of "Lordhamn" by the Finnish National Opera; in 2007, the Helsinki Philharmonic conducted Segerstam in Carlsen's In 2007, Sjökvist conducted the Helsinki Philharmonic in a performance of Carlsen's Violin Concerto with Sjökvistam as violin soloist.
