SACD hybrid disc of works by Valine and Buene, Norwegian composers of different generations and styles. Rolf Vallene (1957-), who has composed against a background ranging from avant-garde rock, jazz, and ancient music to traditional classical music, won the NOMUS (Nordic Music Committee) Prize for his Clarinet Concerto (1996). Ivin Buehne (1973-) is also known for his work as a writer and for his "contemplative" works such as "The Possible Cities/ Landscapes of the Essence" (2L 083SABD). This album contains two works by each of these two Norwegian composers of different generations and styles. Värne's "Under City Skin" is an adaptation of a work for "violinist, string orchestra, and surround sound" with the viola as soloist. It is a "poetic journey of sound" in four movements: "High-heeled Shoes," "The Park at Night," "Locomotive," and "Pastorale," which incorporate "the real sounds of the city.Appearances," which the composer describes as "a sensation that appears and disappears," will be performed in a revised version for a small 15-member ensemble of a work he wrote at the request of the Ensemble Intercontemporain. Buene's "Violin Concerto" is a work centered on pages of delicate, poetic interweaving of sounds. The three movements, "Falling Angels," "Sound Asleep," and "Among the Voices of the Dead," reflect the composer's musical and literary background. Miniatures" consists of six "miniatures," including fragments of Schubert's sonatas, and other ideas thrown in as they came to mind. Violinist Peter Hellestahl (1970-), whose repertoire consists mainly of contemporary works, has received considerable media attention for his recordings on the BIS label of works by Nurheim, Thommesen, Herstenius, Matre, the Danish Nuagård, and the British Thomas Ades.
