SACD hybrid disc of works for chamber music by Finnish violinist Jarko Kuusisto. Concertmaster of the Lahti Symphony Orchestra conducted by Finnish violinists Osmo Vänskä and Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Jáko Kuusisto is also known for his work as a composer and conductor. The work that made his name as a composer is the family opera "Kalevala the Dog," premiered at the Savonlinna Opera Festival in 2004. The Violin Concerto (2011-12) (BIS SA 2020), premiered by Elina Vahala, is another well-known work. This disc contains five chamber works composed by Kuusisto, commissioned by the Shusma Summer Music Festival and the Ravinia Music Festival in the United States. Play III" for string quartet, in which a series of dramatic episodes take an unexpected turn. Play II," which has "the look and feel of film music," is for piano quartet. There are two works for violin and piano.The "Light," based on impressionistic whole-tone harmonies and rhythmic movements in a post-minimalist style, and the "Brilliance," which is built up from various motifs, mostly lyrical in character, that intersect to form a whole. Yurmo" is a work for solo piano commissioned by Paavari Jumpanen. It was inspired by the landscape of the island of Yermo in the archipelago at the southernmost tip of Finland.
