BERWALD / DU PUY
Description:
A collection of chamber music for bassoon from Stockholm performed by bassoonist Agrel, who played in the 18th century orchestra, with a splendid lineup of collaborators SACD hybrid disc Composed in Stockholm in the early 19th century and performed by bassoon virtuoso, German-born and Swedish-born from the beginning of the 19th century. The chamber works were performed by France Prolmeyer (1782-1853), a Dutch bassoonist who played in the 18th Century Orchestra from its inception in 1981, Donna Agrell and friends in "The Bassoons of Stockholm...". The program included two works by Franz Berwald, an "eccentric romanticist" who was elected a member of the Royal Academy of Music the year before his death because his progressive and original music was not accepted by the conservative Swedish musical community. The Seventh Sextet in B-flat major features the same instrumentation as Beethoven's E-flat major work (clarinet, horn, bassoon, violin, viola, cello, and double bass) and has a slow movement with a "prestissimo" music in the middle part. The Quartet in E-flat major for piano, clarinet, horn and bassoon, written in 1819 and for which Berwald had a heated exchange with critics after the first performance, in which Krusel, a well-known composer of clarinet concertos and quartets, participated. The Swiss-born Edouard Dupuis, known as the composer of the Zingspiel "Youth and Folly" and a violinist, singer, and composer in Sweden and Denmark, performed the Quintet for Bassoon and Strings in A minor, which, like Berwald's work, is colored by an operatic melody. The work is a quintet for bassoon and strings in A minor, which, like Berwald's work, is colored with operatic melodies. In this album, Agrel uses a Grenzer bassoon, made around 1820, which seems to be very close to the Grenzer instrument that Proumayr loved so much. The splendid collaborators, including Ronald Brautigam and Yoshiko Morita, are also noteworthy. King International
