SACD hybrid disc of sparkling solo piano works by Kalevi Aho, one of the leading contemporary Finnish composers. Kalevi Aho, one of Finland's leading contemporary composers, has become well known through BIS's active recordings of his works. This album collects works written by Aho for solo piano between 1965 and 1993. The 19 Preludes, composed between 1965 and 1968, are a collection of works from the period when Aho began to study composition in earnest and have a very accessible melody. The three small piano pieces were composed in 1971, coinciding with the time when he was composing his third symphony. The Piano Sonata of 1980 is one of Aho's masterpieces. The Sonata for Piano, composed in 1980, is one of Aho's masterpieces. He wrote very technical and virtuoso piano exercises during this period, and this sonata is full of technical passages. Sonja Hulaki is a Finnish female pianist who won the fourth prize at the Schubert Competition in 2003 and the third prize at the Liszt Competition in 2008, and is currently active in Finland and Europe.
