Brazilian Soul Burst! Neschling's second Respighi release is "Impressions of Brazil" and "Quirky Shop"! Following the Rome Trilogy (BISSA1720), John Neschling's second Respighi release is "Impressions of Brazil" and "Quirky Shop". Neschling, a Brazilian conductor of Schoenberg and Bodanzky descent, has a brilliant control of the Liège Philharmonic Orchestra, which is full of splendor and rich colors. Impressions of Brazil" is a compilation of three pieces based on Respighi's impressions from his trip to Brazil in 1927, and was first performed in Sao Paulo in 1928. The second piece, "Butantan," is full of Brazilian cheerfulness, and the melody of the Gregorian chant "The Day of Wrath" in the second piece is impressive. On the other hand, "The Eccentric Shop" is a ballet music arranged from Rossini's "The Mischiefs of Old Age," commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev, the leader of the Ballets Russes, in 1918. The harmony and orchestration, typical of Respighi, are so much better than the original that all eight pieces progress as if they were reading a story. King International
