The new album by Wajim Gruzman, a gifted violist who captivates with his superb sense of pitch and technique, is a fully-fledged all-Prokofiev program! Prokofiev's Violin Sonata No. 1 is a large work in four movements dedicated to David Oistrakh. The modern expression of the two end movements, which Prokofiev himself described as "wind through the graveyard," is unique among his works, and the melody is very impressive. On the other hand, the Violin Sonata No. 2 op. 95bis, originally a flute sonata, was arranged for violin at David Oistrakh's insistence, and the revised version was even better received than the original, becoming known worldwide through performances by Oistrakh, Szigeti, and other great composers.The coupling includes the famous "The Montagues and Capulets," "The Dance of the Daughters with Lilies in Their Hands," and "The Mask" from Romeo and Juliet, which was recorded as an encore piece. The recording is again presented with Gruzman's typical crispness, and it can be said that a definitive recording of Prokofiev's Violin Sonatas, which have rapidly become popular in recent years, has been released. He and his accompanist, Angela Joffe, also played well together in the superb collection of violin pieces (BISSA1652). She is no match for Gruzman's overwhelming technique and plays the difficult Prokofiev piece with ease. King International
