The latest release of a collection of works by Australian composer Brett Dean (1961-) includes the violin concerto "The Lost Art of Letter Writing," "Will" for 12 violas, and "Regret and Love" for chorus and orchestra. Bred Dean is also known as a virtuoso viola player and was a member of the Berlin Philharmonic for 14 years, and has released several albums on the BIS label, including his own viola concerto (2005), Twelve Angry Men (1996), Intimate Decisions - for unaccompanied viola (1996), and Komarov's Crash ( 2006) are available on the album (BIS1696).The violin soloist in the violin concerto "The Lost Art of Letter Writing" on this album is the German orthodox violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann. Zimmermann, who is already in his late 40s, is now a virtuoso violinist and has been recording extensively for the BIS label in recent years. Zimmermann, who is known for his steady technique and beautiful sound, is also famous for his wide repertoire of contemporary music. This four-movement violin concerto is subtitled Hamburg 1854 (first movement), The Hague 1882 (second movement), Vienna 1886 (third movement), and Gerilderie 1879 (fourth movement). The work has a very fresh sound with a lot of technique throughout.The "Testament" was inspired by the famous "Heiligenstadt Testament" written by Beethoven to his nephew Karl and his brother Johann, and was written for the viola players of the Berlin Philharmonic, of which Dean was once a member.
