After returning to Iceland in 1945, he became active as a composer and was instrumental in founding the Icelandic Composers' Society and an organization that dealt with copyright issues. He also founded the Icelandic Composers Association and an organization that dealt with copyright issues. His works such as "Geyser" (BIS 830) and "Hecla" (BIS 1030), which show "Icelandic identity" with their unique harmonic and orchestral techniques, as well as the mixed chorus "Requiem" (BIS 1030) and three string quartets "Death and Life," "Life and Death," and "El Greco" (BIS 691) are also representative of his work. There are 32 songs, ranging from "Three Poems of Hauvamaaul" (1924) to "Get Up, Stone House" (1958), a poem by Joonas Hatlgrímsson. The works show a variety of styles, including late romanticism, works utilizing dissonance, and "I am Young," which uses the "parallel fifths" of the Icelandic folk song "Futagouta" (Twins' Song). Tenor Finnur Bjarnason, who studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in Iceland and London and has been a member of the Komishoper in Berlin since 2003, and Otrun Magnússon, who recorded the complete piano works of Jówn Reyhus (BIS 692). The recording (SMK20), originally released on the Smekkleysa label in Iceland, has been remastered by BIS engineers. King International
