Founded in 1988, the Amsterdam Sinfonietta is the only professional string orchestra in the Netherlands and has been active internationally under the leadership of Candida Thompson, concertmaster since 1995 and artistic director since 2003. The Amsterdam Sinfonietta has gained popularity for its performances and recordings of "string ensemble versions" of various chamber music works by Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Shostakovich, and others. This recording features Tchaikovsky's "Serenade for Strings," one of the most beautiful masterpieces for string ensemble, and the "String Orchestra Version" from "String Quartet No. 2" written by Arensky as a memorial to Tchaikovsky.The second movement of Arensky's string version, which he arranged himself, was also known as "Variations on a Theme by Tchaikovsky," but this time, it has been arranged by the popular Dutch arranger Malin van Ploeijen, who has also arranged the first and third movements for Brahms (CCSSA30411) by the Amsterdam Sinfonietta, Piazzolla (CCSSA33613) by Rick Stoutin, etc. The popular Dutch arranger Malin van Plooyen, who has arranged for the Brahms (CCSSA30411) and Rick Stotin's Piazzolla (CCSSA33613), also arranged the 1st & 3rd movements in the complete version (world premiere recording).
