Renato Mundi's First Solo CD Telemann's Fantasia for Unaccompanied Gamba! Telemann's "12 Fantasias for Solo Viola da Gamba" by Renato Mundi, a viola da gamba player who studied with Hille Perl and Christine von der Goltz. The twelve pieces were composed in different keys, from the dark G major of No. 7 to the luminous D major of No. 2, with all the hues and moods The fast movements, in particular, are characterized by the old counterpoints, which are not as strong as those in the earlier movements. The use of both the old counterpoint style and the more modern Gallant style, especially in the fast movements, is a feature, and the light, witty, melodic elements are interestingly combined with the counterpoint music. Mundi understands what Telemann intended, finds the right character in terms of what is realistic and possible for the gamba, and succeeds in playing each piece with aplomb. The tasteful tone of the gamba is superb in this piece. Tokyo M-Plus
