Dimitri Ferstman is a Russian cellist born in 1945 who studied with Natalya Gutman at the Moscow Conservatory and founded the Glinka String Quartet in 1967. He spent his childhood in the Soviet Union and immigrated to the Netherlands in 1978. Together with his wife, Mira Basrauskaya, he regularly performs on major stages at home and abroad. The ensemble is renowned for their passionate and songful ensemble playing, and their 2009 release on the Cobra label, "Russian Songs Sung by the Cello" (COBRA0023), received rave reviews from the international media. For this album, they have chosen their favorite composers, and Schumann's Violin Sonata has been arranged by cellist Ferstmann into a cello sonata version. We chose the music that is most familiar to us," said Fershtman, "because it is the music that we love. We want to emphasize the unique song character of these romantic pieces.Singing is the basis of Russian musical education, and it is precisely this skill that is the starting point for our interpretations."
