Description:
The Norwegian Naval Band (Norwegian Armed Forces Western Band) is one of the "professional" bands that the Norwegian Armed Forces has. Based in the port city of Bergen, the band is deeply rooted in the musical life of Bergen as a military band. The newly recorded "Armed Man" is a tribute to their collaboration with Bergen-based composer Shetyr Voslef, with whom they have collaborated for many years. Cantus Lutra Lutra was composed as a "double concerto" for alto saxophone, percussionist, and janissary orchestra. The alto saxophone represents "a group of sea otters singing happily as seen in a video" and the percussion represents "sea otters caught in a trap" in memory of the otters who were caught in a cod cage set by Vosleff. Mockingbird II is an adaptation of Mockingbird for woodwinds, inspired by a "very lovely and original bird song" Vosleff heard while swimming in a small pool in Texas.Armed Man" is a piece based on the Renaissance song "Armed Man" and was created using counterpoint.
