(1.2. was released in MS1148) Joshua Pierce is from New York.After studying at the Juilliard School in the 1960s, he attended master classes by Walter Piston, Vincent Persichetti, Carlos Chavez, and Henry Cowell, and also studied contemporary music (in fact, his performance of John Cage's works for prepared piano (In fact, his performance of John Cage's "Works for Prepared Piano" on a Wergo CD is highly acclaimed.) This disc features a profound program of Brahms concertos, Frank's symphonic poems with solo piano, and Weber's small concertos. Pierce's piano is a magnificent combination of strong keys and a delicate touch. Brahms' Second Concerto, a symphony with solo piano, was played with overwhelming passion and was well worth listening to. The Martinů Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Kirk Trevor and the Slovak National Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Režiha also gave enthusiastic performances. (Tobu Shoji Co., Ltd.)
