This collection of orchestral works by David Matthews (b.1943), whose diverse activities over nearly six decades, including time spent as Britten's assistant in the 1960s and collaborations with Sculthorpe in the 1970s, have established his international reputation as one of the leading symphonists of our time. Dutch conductor Jak van Steen, who has frequently collaborated with David Matthews, will conduct Symphony No. 8, commissioned by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and premiered in 2015, and A Vision of the Sea, also commissioned by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and performed at the 2013 BBC Proms. Jak van Steen has held key posts with the Dutch National Ballet, Weimar State Theatre, Dortmund Philharmonic Orchestra, and BBC National Orchestra of Wales, and currently holds the position of principal guest conductor of the Ulster Orchestra and Prague Symphony Orchestra. 2017 will also see him work with the New Japan he also performed with the Philharmonic Orchestra.
