JULIANA HATFIELD THREE Massachusetts singer/songwriter JULIANA HATFIELD, who has been a part of the 90's alternative/indie rock scene with BLAKE BABIES, THE LEMONHEADS and JULIANA HATFIELD THREE, emerged from the Boston-area scene and has released many records under her solo name, including She is a veteran of the Boston-area scene and has released many solo works on labels such as ATLANTIC and BAR NONE. An extension of a career that has combined indie guitar pop with introspective songwriting, LIGHTNING MIGHT STRIKE was born out of a new life in Western Massachusetts and a deep experience of loss. Shortly after moving from a longtime urban apartment to a local town about a two-hour drive away and living on her own, she experienced a series of events: "ASHES," about the death of her best friend; "CONSTANT COMPANION," a song about saying goodbye to her dog; "SCRATCHERS," about her mother's diagnosis of esophageal cancer. JULIANA HATFIELD herself has been in a deep depression for nearly a year, which is reflected in the lyrics of "LONG SLOW NERVOUS BREAKDOWN," "HARMONIZING WITH MYSELF" and "WHERE ARE YOU NOW. In his own family history, his mother's brother is a member of his family. The title of the album is a questioning of inevitable fate and uncontrollable forces, as the family history of the artist includes a lightning strike at the age of 16 by his mother's younger brother. FALL APART" with its dry guitar and tight drums, "LONG SLOW NERVOUS BREAKDOWN" with its progressively heavier chord progression that depicts a mental breakdown, "POPSICLE" with its pop hooks and helplessness, "MY HOUSE IS HARMONIZING WITH MYSELF", which back-illuminates loneliness with its polyphonic chorus, and many more. The band's sound is supported by CHRIS ANZALONE on drums and ED VALAUSKAS on bass, while JULIANA HATFIELD's guitar and vocals convey a sense of oscillation between hope and resignation. The appeal of this album is that while it deals with fate and trauma, it also manages to be guitar pop with strong hooks in the JULIANA HATFIELD style. Recorded at her home in Massachusetts, the guitars and keyboards are mixed with musicians from the Boston area, creating a work with a temperature that reaches 90s US alternative fans of THE BREEDERS, LIZ PHAIR, VERUCA SALT, and others.
