Petr Holman) Performers Zemlinsky String Quartet The Zemlinsky String Quartet is a Czech ensemble belonging to the illustrious tradition of string quartets in Central Europe. Following their recording of "Bartók & Dohnányi: Piano Quintets (EPRC0063)," recorded in collaboration with Paolo Giacometti and awarded the CHOC de Classica and RITMO Coup de coeur, this album features two string quartets by Smetana, the great composer of his native Czech Republic. This album, following on the heels of the release of "Talk & Dohnányi: Piano Quintets (EPRC0063)," features two string quartets by the great Czech composer Smetana, and a string quartet arrangement of "The Clown's Dance" from his famous Czech opera, "The Sold Bride. As the subtitle "From My Life" suggests, String Quartet No. 1 is semi-autobiographical, symbolizing Smetana's own life, and the viola player who premiered it was Dvořák, one of the country's most famous composers. The String Quartet No. 2, completed in 1883, is Smetana's last work, completed in 1883, with strong musical ideas, despite suffering from serious hearing problems. It is one of the most famous Czech operas and the most successful encore piece at their concerts (played at least 100 times!). The program closes with the string quartet version of "The Clown's Dance" from "The Sold Bride," one of the most famous Czech operas and one of their most successful encores (performed at least 100 times!).
