The art of variation as heard in a performance technique that no longer exists "Diminution" was an improvisational method of ornamentation from the Renaissance to the Baroque period, in which notes were broken down into smaller and smaller variations. There are still some books that teach how to make variations based on the core melody, and it was an important skill for performers to improvise and add witty diminutions. This album is a collection of diminutions on vocal pieces by other composers, allowing the listener to hear what the technique was all about. The album includes works by the performers themselves, as well as works from the same period. The viola bastarda is a type of viol, and is an instrument that excelled at improvisation.
